Recording for the Scepter label which also brought us the incredible B.J. Thomas, The Buoys are actually listed as a Chicago area band. They released 4 singles between 1969 through 1971 but the biggest hit was "Timothy". They are also known for having the help of Rupert Holmes as arranger and songwriter. Actually the "sixth Buoy". Rupert was also a silent partner with Ron Dante on the amazing bubblegum classic "Tracy" by The Cuff Links. Rupert's recordings of this period from working with The Buoys can be found on his Excelcior self-titled lp from 1980. The Buoys may have be used as session players for these songs.

David Buskin attended Brown University in time for the 60s folk boom, supplementing his income gigging with various folk and rock bands. After Brown, he moved on to The Berklee School of Music in Boston where he began to write songs. After selling five songs to Mary Travers for her album, Morning Glory, Buskin toured with her a couple of years as her opening act and later signed with Epic records in the early '70s.

The group originally featured singer/guitarist Rabin, former Mouse & the Traps singer/guitarist Doug Rhone, and vocalist H.L. Voelker. By the time the group released their sophomore album, 1973's "Lookin' for a Smile" Rabon was gone, leaving Rhone and Voelker to surround themselves with an extensive collection of sessions players. Co-produced by Robin Hood Brains and the late Randy Fouts, it's one of those albums that goes by smooth and effortlessly. Reflecting a mixture of originals (including two tracks by former member Rabon) and outside covers, there wasn't really a bad performance here. Both Rhone and Voelker had strong voices that were well suited for the mixture of country and rock scattered throughout the ten tracks ...

The Flying Circus was formed in August 1968 in Sydney as a country, folk-rock band by Bob Hughes on bass guitar and vocals, Doug Rowe on guitar and vocals (ex-New Zealand group, Castaways), Colin Walker on drums and James Wynne on vocals and guitar. They performed "harmony-rich covers of Byrds, Dylan and Dillards country songs." Like the Byrds, a prominent part of their early sound came from the use of a 12-string Rickenbacker guitar. The Flying Circus signed to EMI in late 1968 and appeared at an outdoor concert in Sydney's Domain on Australia Day 1969. The original line-up recorded a cover version of "Shame Shame", but it was not released at that time.

They are literate and poetic without giving the reader anything to laugh at. At this point, any smart record digger will pull this particular title. A cursory needle drop may or may not reveal the album's potential. Depending on where the needle lands, it may sound like Crosby, Stills and Nash, or it may sound like the music we have come to know as "yacht rock," the smooth-sailing sounds of Christopher Cross, Hall & Oates, The Doobie Brothers, or Kenny Loggins.
